Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum of Contemporary Art (CAFA MoCA)

Beijing, China

Client: CAFA MoCA
Architect: Arata Isozaki and Associates
Completion: 2008

The Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), is the first and only advanced academy of fine arts under direct charge of Department of Education in China. The new CAFA Contemporary Art Museum, situated at the northeast corner of the campus, offers over 150,000 square feet of rotating exhibition space.

The energy and spirituality of CAFA MoCA is achieved by the integration of daylight and artificial light, creating a luminous environment that enhances both art objects and architectural space. FMA incorporated sources within the silk skylight membrane to create a visual uniformity between day and night hours and curved surfaces. Track lighting was the key component in providing the required flexibility for temporary installations.
