Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center

Washington, DC

Client: Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation
Architect: Pei Cobb Freed & Partners / Ellerbe Becket
Completion: 1998

This three-million square foot building, to be used by the government and private sector, is the second largest building in Washington, D.C. after the Pentagon. FMS designed lighting for the public spaces including the block long plaza, exterior façades, entry lobbies, a ninestory atrium, auditorium, rotunda, underground parking and the many public circulation areas.

The lighting goals were to create a visual bridge from the neoclassical exterior to the contemporary interior spaces. Lighting was also used to as a wayfinding aid within this vast and complex building.

Lighting featured architectural surfaces, reinforced the architectural volumes, provided depth to the spaces, and emphasized the richness and importance of the materials.
