Sustainability is an important parameter in the FMS design process. FMS has taken an active role in research and development of lighting systems that consume less energy, cost less to install and maintain, and have minimum impact on the environment. As members of both the United States Green Building Council and International Dark-Sky Association, we seek to create a lighting system for each project that will realize all practical benefits of sustainable design through careful coordination and collaboration with the client and architectural team.
Our on-staff LEED Accredited Professionals track and assist in the development of guidelines to provide our prjojects a clear direction in sustainability. Our LEED projects include 2000 Avenue of the Stars, Case Middle School, Goldman Sachs, the Rhode Island School of Design, Seattle City Hall, Seattle Civic Center and U.S. Federal Courthouse in Jackson, MS. Today most large projects in our studio seek LEED accreditation or apply alternate conservation guidelines.
FMS follows sustainability principles through the use of the following design techniques:
Energy Conservation: We apply appropriate technology to guarantee energy code compliance and best use of reference.
Light Sources: Efficiency, innovation, longevity, and control are our watch words.
Daylight utilization: We apply our extensive experience in both passive and active daylighting systems and design.
Light Pollution: We are strong proponents of shielded exterior lighting and control systems to limit the use of unnecessary nighttime lighting.
Regional Resources: We maintain detailed information on manufacturers around the world and specify suppliers local to the project site.
