The Twenty Two

On the edge of New York’s Union Square, this six-story, 1891 YWCA dormitory has been restored and transformed into a new nine-story boutique hotel and private club.

The project pairs extensive restoration with modern expansion. Preservation strategies include a meticulous reconstruction of the carved sandstone masonry at street level and a bold interpretation of the original architect’s vision for a gabled roof line. A new glass curtain wall along the north elevation of the grand suite is framed by a delicately patterned masonry screen, recalling the texture and depth of what might have been.

Behind the preserved façade, the hotel offers guests an experience blending historic character with contemporary renewal. Within 80,000 square feet, the development boasts 72 guest rooms, and broad amenities, including a members lounge, gym, multiple dining venues, and landscaped roof terraces.
