Envisioning the Future of Lights by Charles G. Stone – Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition

The technology that makes light is evolving at breathtaking speed. The great challenge is to find equilibrium between our desire for low cost, low energy solutions and our need for beauty and comfort. We must remember that just because technology allows us to make a particular new lighting effect – does not mean that we should do it. We must instead take care to use new technology with care.

I envision a future filled with light. We will work, learn, play, and heal in spaces that are filled with beautiful, appropriate, sustainable light. Lighting for tasks, for decoration, for our lives will be perfectly conceived and integrated. When lighting designers do our job properly – then no one will notice the light, because it will be “just right”.

We will need to educate everyone: ourselves, our clients, our contractors and suppliers. We will need support and innovation from our manufacturers. Together we can make a future filled with light.
