Erie Basin Park

Brooklyn, New York

Landscape Architect: Lee Weintraub
Completion: 2008

This most unusual six acre storefront delivers customers via waterway to IKEA’s New York City flat-pack design furniture warehouse.

Indirect post top mounted luminaires dot the esplanade and string along the waterfront edge to safely light the walkways and seating areas. Contemporary lounge chairs with custom table tops are fitted with fluorescent colored prismatic globes emitting a soft blue glow.

Formally a shipyard, the cranes were preserved in situ and now serve as orientation markers as they direct waterway visitors to and from the Gowanus Canal. Each crane has been transformed into a piece of artwork, as they play with color and complement the drama of the riverside walkway.
