Japan Post Tower

Tokyo, Japan

Client: Japan Post Group
Design Architect: Jahn Architects
Associate Architect: Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei
Completion: 2012

A skyscraper emerges on Tokyo’s skyline with the 38-story Japan Post Tower designed by Helmut Jahn’s Chicago firm in collaboration with Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei. FMS was commissioned to light the exterior of the historic 1931 Tokyo Central Post Office building and the 200 meter (656 feet) newly constructed tower beyond.

The soft glow of the historic façade provides gentle contrast with the crisp modern tower. Warm white accents on the tower wings zip up from the base to tie the project together. The crown, which has multiple lighting modes, stands appropriately distinct in the “neighborhood” of tower tops.

The design on the office high-rise began in 2007, and construction ran from June 2009 until March 2012.
