The Studio Museum in Harlem
The new home of The Studio Museum in Harlem, embodies the essence of the community while elevating the museum’s global presence. This 82,000 square foot building is inspired by the brownstones, churches, and lively sidewalks of the Harlem community.
The project advances the museum typology, with its approach to the display and reception of art. A “reverse stoop,” at the entrance leads visitors into the museum. This grand space evokes the neighborhood church interiors and serves as an entry hall and welcoming gathering space, complete with a café.
The interior includes galleries of different sizes, each equipped with flexible art lighting to accommodate the diverse range of works in the permanent collection and ongoing installations. Circulation spaces between galleries showcase two-dimensional art with dedicated integrated lighting located in architectural ceiling slots.
Studios for the artist-in-residence program and educational classrooms, are equipped with adaptable lighting to suit various activities. At night, the building’s illuminated façade showcases integrated artwork, while a rooftop terrace offers breathtaking views of Harlem and the city, complete with event lighting for gatherings.
