Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) Lantau Airport Railway

Hong Kong, China

Client: Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC)
Completion: 1998

The Lantau Airport Railway, an integral part of a $60 billion infrastructure program, was built to connect the new Hong Kong Airport at Chek Lap Kok with Central Hong Kong. Fisher Marantz Stone served as the Specialist Lighting Consultant and in this role, functioned as the lighting master planner. We surveyed the newest rail systems in the world and developed a comprehensive set of guidelines and criteria for a new series of stations. The goal was to provide low cost and easy to maintain lighting solutions that offered a higher order of fit and finish than the existing MTR system.

We worked with eight teams of architects and engineers to support the designs for each of seven new stations and the train depot. We also acted as lighting project managers, reporting team progress to the MTRC, identifying problems and helping to keep the projects on budget and on schedule. Each project was followed through to commissioning. FMS surveyed the completed works to verify that they met the required criteria. Finally we recorded our findings in a photo documentary report.
