Mr. Ali was born and grew up in Kuwait, the second youngest of four siblings. After studying at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Ali earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Engineering, with a concentration in construction engineering and management. Ali then earned a Master’s in Building Science at the University of Southern California. With his background in engineering and building science, Ali approaches lighting from a technical and performance-based perspective while making sure designs work as intended in theory and in practice.

Lighting plays a huge role in experiencing space, and Ali has always had an interest in how space feels, not simply how it looks. He was drawn to lighting design after recognizing that lighting directly impacts how people experience space. He observed how the intentional use of lighting impacts an environment and experience. These insights solidified Ali’s interest in pursuing Lighting Design as a professional career path and brought him to FMS.

Ali enjoys staying active and goes out into nature whenever he can. Whether it’s hiking a new trail or taking spontaneous road trips to explore new cities and architecture, he enjoys anything that gets him moving and offers a change of scenery to reset and find inspiration outside the studio.
