Miho Museum

Shigaraki, Japan

Client: Shumei Cultural Foundation
Architect: I.M. Pei
Completion: 1997

The Miho Museum in Kyoto houses the renown Shumei Family Collection of precious ancient artifacts from the Middle and Far East.

Set in a beautiful wooded landscape of forest cedars, deep into the mountainside, the museum is characterized by a carefully orchestrated sequence of concealment and unveiling, both above ground and in the underground galleries. The latest lighting technology was utilized to enhance the illumination of the collection while maintaining the subtle, shifting natural light conditions.
